Introduction
Welcome to the full conference program. There are a total of over 200 sessions over the course of six days. Presenters are from 32 different nations. You'll find details of sessions and presenters for all three elements of Designing for the 21st Century III:
The number and caliber of presenters is extraordinary. We are deeply grateful to the members of the Program Committee for their time and thoughtful rating of the submitted proposals. Throughout the Pre-Conference Intensive Sessions and the Core Conference the most accomplished universal design experts and emerging leaders from around the globe will share their experience and ideas. Sessions are tailored to provide depth on a wide range of topics for audiences ranging from 15 to 250.
A limited number of keynote sessions will bring delegates together for presentations about issues and strategies that are of interest across topics and design disciplines.
In many cases, Pre-Conference Intensives and Charrettes/Case Studies will be held off-site, elsewhere in Rio de Janeiro. Core Conference sessions will all be held within the Sofitel Rio Conference Center and will be scheduled from Thursday morning until Saturday evening. Most Core Conferences sessions will be organized as concurrent sessions and you will be able to choose what you'd like to attend without pre-registering. The one exception is for Working Groups for which we request registration in order to keep the groups small enough for meaningful dialogue. The two large Post-Conference Forums will be held on Sunday.

Types of Sessions
Pre-Conference
Tuesday, 7 December & Wednesday, 8 December
Tuesday and Wednesday are the Pre-Conference days. Two kinds of sessions occur during this period.
Pre-Conference Intensives
The Pre-Conference Intensives are either full-day or half-day sessions that will provide state-of-the-art concentrated learning on specific topics. The sessions are led by individuals and teams of the foremost experts in the topical area. Pre-Conference sessions are mini-conferences that can stand alone or complement the experience of the dozens of sessions in the Core Conference. Pre-Conference Intensives require pre-registration and payment of a Pre-Conference Intensive fee.
Charrettes/Case Studies
The other session type is the start of the multi-part Charrettes that begin during the Pre-Conference period. Charrette registrants will spend a portion of a day in an intensive session, many in the Rio community, either Tuesday or Wednesday. That opening session is followed by two working sessions during the Core Conference along with a final presentation. For off-site Charrette sessions, please assume most of the day in order to accommodate travel. Travel will be provided and detailed schedules and preparation materials will be provided to registrants. Charrette sessions require pre-registration and payment of a Charrette fee.
Core Conference
Thursday, 9 December - Saturday, 11 December
The Core Conference will have Keynote Sessions for all delegates and Concurrent Sessions. Concurrent Sessions fall into four categories.
There are two types of forty minute (40') sessions:
-
Forums are 40' presentations with discussion of design research, conceptual models or evolving issues.
-
Projects report on real world experiences using universal design as a framework for designing places, things, communications, policy or programs.
There are two types of ninety minute (90') sessions:
-
Working Groups offer in-depth topical discussions. These groups will explore the state of the art and emerging issues. Pre-registration is required because they have a maximum number of participants. In most cases Working Groups will occur in two parts, an initial meeting and a follow-up meeting on a subsequest day.
-
Plenary Sessions offer multiple perspectives on a single topic. Most mix presenters from different parts of the world. Most Plenary Sessions will accommodate at least 100 delegates.
Post-Conference
Sunday, 12 December
On Sunday there will be two all-day special Post-Conference Forums:
-
International EducatorĀfs Forum
-
Latin American Strategic Planning Forum
Both of these sessions require pre-registration. In the case of the International Educators' Forum, the payment of an additional fee is also required. Detailed information about both of these sessions is avaliable on the Sunday program page.

Language of the Conference
Conference delegates are expected from at least 50 nations. Globally, English is the dominant language in over 60 nations and commonly understood as the lingua franca of the present time. However, Designing for the 21st Century III is about dialogue across cultures. Brazilians speak Portuguese and the rest of the hemisphere speaks Spanish. All Pre-Conference sessions and as many Core Conference sessions as possible will be simultaneously translated into Portuguese, and to the maximum extent possible, also into Spanish.
